How to Implement Our Templates

The PMBOK being a guide for project management doesn’t provide actual examples of project management documents such as the Project Management Plan or subsidiary management plans. This is because no two projects, organizations or project managers are alike. They each have their own unique environment, constraints and needs. ProjectManagementDocs has created a set of templates based on real world project management experience and the project management processes and tools identified in the PMBOK. Our templates can be used with as little or as much editing as you want according to your specific needs.

As the PMBOK Guide is open to interpretation there is no right or wrong format or content for project documents. Our templates are thorough and include lots of information, but they may or may not meet your needs. We recommend that you start with a template and edit as much or as little as you see fit. Don’t be hesitant to delete, add or rewrite entire sections as our templates are intended to be a starting point for you.

You should decide which subsidiary management plans should be presented as a separate plan from the Project Plan and which should be included as a small section within the Project Plan. This should be based on the needs of your organization and project. If cost management requires additional focus then you should include it as a separate management plan and not as a small section in the project plan.

To assist you in understanding the templates we’ve included text explaining the purpose of various sections of the templates. This text is easy to find as it’s in a green font. You should delete the green text from the documents before submitting as a final deliverable.

Where you need to insert your own information we’ve bracketed in blue font what you need to insert. For example in the Project Charter you need to add things such as the project name and Project Manager’s name, these are identified in blue font. Once you have inserted your text use Word’s Format Painter tool to change the color and font to match the surrounding text.

Be sure to edit the page headings, coversheet and signature pages with information specific to your project.

Remember, these templates are just a starting point. You won’t hurt our feelings with your edits so feel free to change them according to your needs.

All of our Project Templates are free for you to copy and use on your project and within your organization. We hope that you find our templates useful and welcome your comments. Public distribution of these templates are only permitted from the Project Management Docs official website at:
